The purpose of this article is to present compelling evidence for why hypnosis is an up and coming new health tool for those with diabetes (primarily type 2 but not exclusively).

"If we did all the things we are capable of, we would literally astound ourselves." - Thomas A. Edison
This article is for educational purposes only and is not intended as medical advice. Before making any changes to your current health care program, consult with your doctor.

In order for a new idea, concept or method to gain popularity, the established idea, concept or method must lose its popularity. In this case, oral medications for type 2 diabetics are the established method losing their popularity. An increasing number of type 2 diabetics are unwilling to take oral medications because of the increasing number of serious side effects and the availability of alternatives. In an October 2002 Diabetes Health article titled: Use of Alternative Medicine High in People With Type 2 Diabetes it states that "Forty percent of those using complementary and alternative medicine indicate that they do so to prevent complications."

Type 2 diabetics are becoming increasingly concerned about complications because of stories like the following: In February of 2007, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) posted an announcement (1) on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) website about a letter they wrote to doctors explaining how certain, commonly used diabetes drugs can significantly increase the risk of bone fractures in women. And the above incident is only one of a number of significant cases. In November of 2007, European and U.S. diabetologists called for greater caution in prescribing oral diabetes pills like Avandia which has been linked to a disturbing increase in heart attack risk.(2)

This warning by the world’s two leading diabetes organizations came two weeks after the USFDA recommended black box warnings for Avandia. The USFDA requires a drug to carry a black box warning if the drug has an above average occurrence of serious or even life-threatening side-effects. This chain of recent events concerning widely used diabetes drugs is very alarming to many diabetics because they are eerily reminiscent of what happened to a very popular diabetes drug not long ago. In 1998, warnings(3) about using the widely prescribed drug Rezulin started appearing from the manufacturer and by 2000, Parke-Davis voluntarily pulled their drug off the market because of an alarming number of very serious side-effects including death. And, of further concern to diabetics is the fact that the drugs now receiving usage warnings are in the same drug class as Rezulin.

The point here is that more and more diabetics are beginning to see a disturbing trend concerning widely prescribed diabetes drugs. The drugs are released with great fanfare and then there are some very serious problems. For example, Byetta is a new diabetes drug that has now been linked with causing acute pancreatitis (4). So, as a result of this trend, more and more type 2 diabetics are now actively searching for healthier alternatives to controlling their diabetes and perhaps even eliminating it. At this same time, hypnosis is becoming more and more recognized as a powerful tool for health. One example among many is an amazing article published by the Mayo Clinic. The article is titled Hypnosis In Contemporary Medicine.(5)
The conclusion of the Mayo article should make any person and especially those with diabetes, take notice: "The acceptance of hypnosis as a mode of treatment in medicine is increasing as a result of ‘careful, methodical, empirical work of many research pioneers.’"
"Many important trials reviewed here have helped to establish the role of hypnosis in contemporary medicine. These trials have established the utility and efficacy of hypnosis for several medical conditions, either alone or as part of the treatment regimen."(6)
What is interesting is that the Mayo Clinic is basically agreeing with the title of a November 3rd, 1958 Life Magazine cover article: "Hypnosis: Old ‘Black Art’ Is Now Accepted Medical Tool". 50 very quiet years have passed since hypnosis was recognized by the main stream press as a legitimate and powerful tool for health. It’s almost like everyone was in a trance and couldn’t see what was right in front of them. But now, consumers are far more motivated to take of themselves and so they are becoming more educated largely through the internet where they are looking for and finding, huge amounts of quality information. For example, if a person were to search for quality information about hypnosis for children, they would eventually find a University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital web page (7) with some amazing statements by doctors. Following is an excerpt from that web page: "Children and adolescents with chronic medical or emotional conditions often benefit from medical self-hypnosis, which is taught at University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital, Fairview. This therapeutic approach, based upon the intimate relationship between mind and body, has been recognized in the medical community since the 1950s.

Medical self-hypnosis teaches patients how to focus and concentrate, leading to a state of inner relaxation and increased self-control. It is a useful tool for managing mental and physical functions in a variety of situations, from tolerating pain to regulating behavior. Most children and adolescents can learn self-hypnosis - even the very young."

(Ed. Note: Adults can also learn to successfully use hypnosis as well.)

Now, with respect to people with diabetes but especially children, let’s look at the above excerpt and pick out 3 critical phrases: "chronic medical condition", "self-control" and "regulating behavior". Diabetes is a chronic medical condition. And, self-control is certainly crucial in those with diabetes. Regulating behavior is also critical to anybody with diabetes but especially children because poor childhood behavioral decisions carry devastating early adult consequences.

When will more medical practitioners start realizing the enormous benefits of hypnosis? Just as importantly, how come they don’t understand the huge savings - emotional, physical and financial that can be realized by the applications of hypnosis? Well, more medical practitioners will begin realizing the benefits of hypnosis when their patients bring articles like this into them. It is very hard (but not impossible) to ignore well-documented evidence. Doctors and nurses are over-worked and they certainly don’t have time to sit down and search for safe, proven, non-pharmaceutical remedies for their patients. This is why they don’t understand the potential comprehensive savings that hypnosis can bring. And, frankly, most physicians will tell you that their day-to-day education comes out of the mouths of drug sales representatives. Don’t get me wrong please. I am NOT against pharmaceutical drugs. I am for them with this caveat: I am very much against the inappropriate prescription of medicines and that is epidemic in our country. By the way, did you know that hypnosis has been shown to decrease the need for certain drugs? Pain medication reduction is one example. (8), (9)
So since hypnosis (the power of the mind) has a long and clearly demonstrated history of helping to reduce certain medication needs, then isn’t it at least worthwhile looking at to see if it can help reduce other medication needs? Well, it appears that someone has been wondering about the influence of the mind on the body as it relates to diabetes.

Dr. Richard Surwit of Duke University makes the following 3 enlightening points: (10), (11)

1) Stress management techniques, when added to standard care, help reduce glucose levels.
2) The change is nearly as large as you would expect to see from some diabetes-control drugs.
3) Stress management techniques are simple, quick to learn, and have been shown to work for multiple conditions, including coronary syndromes.

One point of this article has been to bring to light well-researched information which proves not only that the power of the mind can help persons with diabetes but that it must be utilized sooner rather than later.

Hypnosis must be used in conjunction with standard health care sooner rather than later to help those with diabetes (as well as other challenges) because although drugs can be life saving, their negative side-effects are numerous, often unnecessary and costly in many ways. And, the lack of patient compliance is making their usefulness questionable. And keep in mind that there are things hypnosis can do that drugs cannot. A few moments ago you read statements by doctors at the University of Minnesota telling how, among many things, hypnosis can help increase self-control as well as positively regulate behavior. There is not a drug in the world that can increase a person’s self-control.

Many widely prescribed diabetes medications have had significant problems leading first to warnings and then removal from the market.

More and more type 2 diabetics are looking for information that can help them to better manage their health without having to use drugs.

Diabetics are primarily using the internet to get information that can help them improve their health in some way. And yes, they have to be discriminating because as well as a lot of high quality information, there is also a lot of bunk.

Coinciding with this trend is the increasing investigation and recognition of hypnosis as a legitimate and effective healing tool. In fact, the American Medical Association recognized the value of hypnosis in 1958. (12)

The above summary and facts leads to the following major point of this article: Diabetes is a perfect condition for the applications of mind-power (hypnosis) in many ways. Following are just a few of the many possible applications of hypnosis to diabetes:

Enhanced self-control and behavioral regulation which will lead to better food choices, exercise and other habits that can stabilize and improve a diabetic’s condition and can sometimes lead to a remission of diabetes symptoms (if enough weight is lost for example).

Physiologically, the power of the mind is already demonstrated to have a blood sugar lowering effect for people with diabetes (type 2 so far). In light of this evidence, the following reasonable questions need to be considered: (a) Why isn’t hypnosis used more for this purpose? (b) What else is possible in this area and shouldn’t it be investigated?

Pain increases blood sugar levels. If a diabetic is experiencing pain (not uncommon), then chances are quite likely that their sugar levels are being adversely affected. While pain medications are one alternative, hypnosis should be the first choice because it is the safest and least costly.

Hypnosis is not a panacea. While a great deal of compelling evidence has been presented in favor of the application of hypnosis to diabetes (and other challenges), it must be kept in mind that it is not being presented as a cure-all; only as an valuable and highly effective adjunct to standard care.

It is believed that as many as 30 percent of people who visit their doctor or hospital emergency unit complaining of chest pains, may actually be experiencing anxiety or panic attack symptoms, and not heart attacks or stroke. Once correctly diagnosed, panic disorders can be treated using a variety of anxiety medications, or more recently the preferred option, at least initially, is psychotherapy and behavioral or cognitive therapies.

Pounding heart, dizziness and sheer terror for no apparent reason are among the symptoms of a panic attack or anxiety disorder that strikes mostly women.

Three million or more Americans suffer from panic disorder which was recognized as a distinct psychiatric condition 12 years ago. Dr. Frederick K. Goodwin, director of the National Institute of Mental Health, said 75 percent of those who suffer from panic disorder do not get the help they need - although a variety of therapies can lift the paralyzing fear for 70 percent to 90 percent of sufferers.

Panic disorder, which usually surfaces during teen-age years or early 20s, affects twice as many women as men. An attack may last only seconds or minutes, but leaves a victim unsteady for some time afterward.

Fear of Anticipation

Frequently, the anticipation of having subsequent attacks is more frightening than an attack itself.

Panic disorder is diagnosed when either an unprovoked episode of at least four of the following symptoms occurs within one month, or when one such attack is followed by persistent fear of having another:

Intense terror

Sweating

Numbness or tingling, especially in the hands or feet

Hot or cold flashes

Shortness of breath

Faintness

Heart palpitations

Trembling

Chest discomfort

Feelings of unreality

Nausea

Choking or smothering sensations

Fear of losing control, going crazy or dying

Sufferers may be overwhelmed by a sense of impending doom and a feeling of unreality. They often think they are having a stroke, heart attack or that they’re losing their mind, as the chest pains they are experiencing can also be a symptom of a panic attack. Some manage to function. Others are forced to give up their jobs and relationships. Many treat their condition with alcohol or illicit drugs. As many as 20 percent of these people may attempt suicide, according to Myrna Weissman, professor of epidemiology at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University and the New York State Psychiatric Institute in New York City.

A substantial number of panic disorder sufferers develop agoraphobia, avoiding situations where they imagine an attack might occur or where help or escape would be difficult. Agoraphobics may be unable to eat in restaurants, travel in cars or planes, cross wide streets or shop in supermarkets. Some may not venture outside their homes.

The exact cause of panic disorder is unclear, but researchers believe the unpredictable attacks are prompted by a biochemical abnormality. Often the first attacks are triggered by physical or emotional stress involving loss or separation.

Two parallel tracks in treating panic disorder have evolved over the last 12 years - medication and behavioural or cognitive therapies. Increasingly experts acknowledge that patients frequently need a combination of drugs and psychotherapy.

There is no one best approach for all patients. Treatment most be tailored to the individual. Some therapists are now trying a new behavioural technique called panic control treatment, in which the physical sensations of fear are aroused in the therapist’s office after a sufferer is taught coping stills.

A panic attack is a sudden feeling of extreme anxiety accompanied by significant physical symptoms such as trembling, sweating and shortness of breath. They are usually accompanied by an overwhelming fear of catastrophe - the person may feel they are dying or suffering a heart attack, or they may fear they are going mad. They can occur in response to specific situations (such as crowded areas) or spontaneously and with no obvious cause. They are usually short-lived (lasting a few minutes) but are so unpleasant that a person may live in fear of it happening again - in many cases, this will lead to the person avoiding situations that they think will trigger an attack (’avoidance behaviour’).

panic attacks quite commonly accompany other anxiety conditions such as generalised anxiety and specific phobias (particularly Agoraphobia - the fear of open spaces). However they can occur outwith these other conditions - a study in 1994 found that 3 people in every 100 had experienced panic attacks alone. Panic Disorder is the term used by Psychiatrists for those psychological conditions in which panic attacks predominate. Wanting to overcome panic attacks is a common reason for why people come to see me for NLP or CBT Edinburgh at my NLP and CBT practice Edinburgh.

Psychological Symptoms of Panic Attacks: Intense anxiety, fear of dying, fear of losing control or going mad, depersonalisation (the unpleasant feeling that you are not ‘real’ or are detached from yourself), derealisation (the unpleasant feeling that your environment is ‘fake’ or you are an ‘actor in a play’)

Physical Symptoms of Panic Attacks: shortness of breath or feeling ’smothered, choking, palpitations (feeling the heart racing or beating irregularly), chest pain, sweating, dizziness or feeling faint, nausea or abdominal discomfort, flushing of the skin or feeling chilled, trembling or shaking.

The feeing of being unable to breath can lead to a compensatory increase in breathing rate (hyperventilation) by the person. This in turn can affect the body adversely, leading to both a worsening of the physical symptoms above and additional symptoms:

Physical Symptoms of Hyperventilation: tinnitus (ringing in the ears),numbness or tingling sensations in the hands, feet and face, headache, weakness, spasms of the hand and foot muscles

In a panic attack, people will usually experience at least 4 of the above symptoms, although most experience many more than this. For a diagnosis of Panic Disorder, the person will experience at least 4 panic attacks in a 4-week period, or experience significant fear of a further attack (and exhibit avoidance behaviour) for 4 weeks following a single episode.

Treatment

If the panic attacks are associated with other conditions such as generalised anxiety, phobia or depression, then the appropriate course of action is to address these underlying issues first - the panic attacks should subside as these other issues are resolved.

If the panic attacks are the main problem, then (as with most psychological problems) two courses of action are available - drug treatment and psychological therapies.

The drug treatment of panic attacks limited. Sedative drugs such as the Benzodiazepines (e.g. Diazepam (Valium)) are very effective in the short term, but are highly addictive and can lead to dependence. Further, when these drugs are withdrawn, a resurgence of the panic is likely. Antidepressants, particularly the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Citalopram (Cipramil) and Paroxetine (Seroxat), are licensed for use in panic disorder. They can cause an initial worsening of symptoms when first taken, and can cause other side effects such as gastro-intestinal disturbance and sexual dysfunction. Drug treatments are not as effective as psychological therapies in these conditions.

NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) recommends Cognitive Therapy for the treatment of panic attacks and panic disorder. Their research has shown it to be more effective than any drug treatments. Therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) involve the patient seeing a therapist on a one-to-one basis for hour-long sessions. The total treatment course is typically between 6 and 12 sessions, with one session a week. The therapies involve an explanation of the psychological and physical symptoms of panic attacks, and may involve the deliberate precipitation of a panic attack during a session. The aim is to reduce the fear associated with the physical symptoms - this fear is often a cause of the attacks itself and the associated avoidance behaviours. Once the fear of the panic attacks is reduced, the attacks themselves will lessen in frequency and severity and, hopefully, disappear altogether.

Despite the clear recommendations by NICE, the availability of Cognitive Therapy remains limited in the NHS. If your GP or local Mental Health Trust is unable to provide the appropriate treatment for your condition, they may be able to recommend a therapist in the private sector.

Stop smoking hypnosis techniques are for those of you who’ve made the decision to quit smoking for life. You’ve chosen a quit smoking technique with a 97.2% success rate. Why so high? Keep reading…
Firstly, making up your mind to stop smoking is 90% of the battle. The last 10%, the hardest part - is actually making the decision final. Using the powerful and proven methods of Hypnotherapy, you can reprogram your mind and body to let go of your habit once and for all, permanently and painlessly! Furthermore, unlike other methods that you may have tried before, stop smoking hypnosis will help you stop instantly… and there are no withdrawal symptoms, no anxiety, and no weight gain either.
As a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist (C.hT) specializing in Neuro Linguistic Programming (THE NUMBER 1 CHANGE TECHNOLOGY IN THE WORLD), I help patients quit smoking everyday for life in my Toronto office.
I am going to reveal some SECRET information that the tobacco companies DO NOT WANT YOU TO KNOW. They want you to believe quitting smoking has to be a painful and a long drawn out process.
The truth is, the smoking habit has no power at all. It never was any benefit to you. It never had the power to give you the things you believed it did: the confidence, the focus, and the street smarts. It was a lie. The creators of the habit invented the lie. If you don’t feed it, all that will happen is that it will die. The scratching and screeching was all fluff, the habit had you fooled. The danger to you was in feeding it and keeping it alive. On it’s own it’s a dead habit; it can’t do any more harm than it’s already done. You should be happy when it is scratching, because that’s when you are in front. The harder it scratches and screeches, the nearer death it is, it will become quiet then, and die. There’s nothing more harmless than a completely dead habit. The only way to kill it is to refuse to feed it.
How You’re Feeding Your Smoking Habit

Habits come from thoughts. Below is a list of researched examples about how are thoughts are created from our brain frequencies.

People who meditate have been found to alter Alpha/Theta brain frequency according to their depth of meditation, reports Japan’s leading Neuro-physiologist, Dr. Tomb Hirai.

He has correlated brain-wave patterns with certain stages of meditation. And according to Dr. Hirai, "Meditation is not merely a state between mental stability and sleep, but a condition in which the mind operates at the optimum. In this condition the person is relaxed but ready to accept and respond positively to any stimulus that may reach them."

Research now confirms that brainwave rhythms correspond to certain states of consciousness, and this suggests that individuals capable of altering their brainwave patterns can have significant control over other mental and physiological functioning.

As Elmer and Alice Green of the famous Menninger Institute first reported in the mid-70’s, "…simply causing your brain to generate theta activity for a few minutes each day seems to have enormous benefits, including boosting the immune system, enhancing creativity, and triggering integrative experiences leading to feelings of psychological well-being."

Even more astonishing are the findings of a study conducted on a group of chronic alcoholics at a University in Colorado. After 13 weeks the group that learned to generate theta and alpha brainwaves, showed a far greater recovery rate, and a complete transformation of personality.

Hypnotherapy Alters Brainwaves

Hypnotherapy is a 25,000 year old Chinese art that clinically allows people to alter their own ‘alpha/theta’ brain frequencies and assist individuals to quit smoking.

What exactly is stop smoking hypnosis?

Hypnotherapy is where the Hypnotherapist only uses words to talk directly with and to your nervous system to allow your own nervous system to re-program yourself at your nervous systems level of operation to assist you in becoming a non-smoker.

There are zero side effects. It is 100% safe and effective. It is all-natural. It is often done in 2 or 4 sessions. Depending on how good the Hypnotherapist is and/or the creator of the audio stop smoking hypnosis program.

Not only do stop smoking hypnosis techniques make changes to your physical dependencies towards smoking, it also erases all emotional issues relating to smoking. This frees up your body and mind to easily and effortlessly let go of smoking permanently.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming is the science of how language affects our lives. Neuro-Linguistic Programming known as (NLP) has a 97% success rate in assisting individuals to permanently quit smoking.

This field is so far reaching and powerful that since the creation of NLP in 1973 any books written about Hypnotherapy have included some material about the field of NLP in them.

Basically most of the skills used in NLP are the same or similar to many hypnotherapy exercises and techniques.

Combining both stop smoking hypnosis techniques and Neuro-Linguistic Programming, have demonstrated to be the best way to quit smoking in my clinic and with my colleagues.

These two combined techniques, by far produce the most effective method ever invented to assist individuals to permanently quit smoking with over a 97.2% success rate in 1 to 2 sessions.

I hope this helps you in uncovering the mystery in evaluating stop smoking hypnosis. If you want to ease your smoking habit, seek out a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist (C.hT) and Master NLP Practitioner or a good audio stop smoking program created by one.

Many clients new to hypnotherapy are surprised to discover that going into a hypnotic state is a skill. Some clients find it is a challenge to allow themselves to "let go" into the altered state. Moving into a guided trance requires the clients to trust both themselves and the hypnotherapist; and developing that trust can take time. There is usually also a need for the hypnotherapist to educate the client about the myths and misconceptions of hypnosis so once the client is engaged in the trance experience he will have an educated basis for determining if he has achieved a hypnotic state. This preparation and education phase can take several sessions and some experimentation with hypnotic techniques and approaches before a client experiences success.

Over the twenty-five years I have trained hypnotherapists and worked with individual clients, I have sought out many alternatives to formal hypnotic inductions as a way to assist clients in working with their subconscious resources for transformation and healing. I strive to empower and support clients who find it difficult to trust themselves and their experience (or lack of experience) in the hypnotic state and commonly suggest to them early on in the therapy alternative approaches to working in trance states. One approach which proves to be evocative, playful , highly creative and is completely self-guided by the client is Sandplay Therapy. Originally developed by Margaret Lowenfeld in the 1930’s for use with children in play therapy, sandplay therapy is currently used with adults, families, corporations and communities. Sandplay therapy is empowering, self-directive and gentle–yet deeply propelling as a transformational vehicle.

In the traditional form of sandplay therapy the therapist provides a waterproof tray approximately 18" wide x 28" long x 3" deep painted blue on the bottom and sides. The tray is half- filled with fine high-grade sand and the therapy room is equipped with shelves which hold a myriad of aesthetic, quality miniature figures. Included in a collection are small trees, plants and people from all races, cultures and periods of history; prehistoric, wild and domesticated animals from all over the world; materials from nature such as rocks, moss, shells, crystals, wood, driftwood and pine cones; and marbles, beads and baubles. A collection also includes toy cars, trains, boats, planes, wagons and other vehicles of travel; cross cultural spiritual and archetypal figures, symbols and icons; as well as miniature figures and objects from daily life. Structures and dwellings from all historical periods and cultures, bridges, fences, towers, and caves are represented in the collection as well as cartoon and fantasy figures that are common in our culture. For the most part, the figures are to scale in relation to the size of each other and the tray of sand.

In the traditional sandplay process the client creates a series of scenes or worlds in the sand by sculpting the dry or wet sand and placing the objects chosen from the shelves in the tray. The therapist’s role is to provide, as Dora Kalff emphasizes in her book Sandplay, a "free and protected space" and to support the client in dealing with any content or emotions that the sandplay evokes. In the traditional approach, the therapist has little or no interaction during the session and provides no interpretation of the tray, but rather waits until the full series of the trays has been completed. At a later time the therapist shows he client slides or videos of the trays in sequence as a map of the client’s healing, integration and individuation process

Sandplay approaches have evolved over the years to be used as an interactive process similar to hypnotherapy. In this more active approach, sandplay can be used for inner child work, parts therapy, dream work, past life therapy, problem solving, anchoring, learning and memory enhancement. A client’s organizing of the figures in the tray is a metaphor for reorganizing one’s consciousness. Clients may move figures around to tell a narrative story or use voice dialogue in psychodrama as figures tell their personal stories. In contrast to the private inner experience of hypnotherapy however, the symbolic work is created outside the client in full view.

When the client is a child, sandplay therapy is especially appropriate. A child relates to the world primarily through his body and sandplay gives the child the opportunity to engage in the therapeutic process in an active kinesthetic way. He can "show" rather than "tell" and allow the subconscious feelings and experiences to spontaneously emerge through play. The "hypnosis" happens in front of the child in the sand, rather than only within the child, giving both the client and therapist access what to before was information or content which was most likely inexpressible by the child. It is the process of engaging in the creative play which is healing. Expressing through symbols, personal maps of experience, metaphors or stories allows the client to become a witness to himself and give him a concrete and direct experience that he is the creator of his own world or experience. Simply observing one’s own process in the box of sand can be tremendously releasing and freeing, giving the client perspective and an experience of not being the problem, but witnessing the problem.

Very much like in hypnosis, sandplay engages the power of suggestion. If a client creates an experience of a potential solution to a problem in the sand, the solution becomes imprinted as a future positive response for the client in his daily life. The memory of the tray or a photo of the creation becomes a post-hypnotic anchor or cue not only for the potential solution to a problem, but also gives the client a way to emotionally have a new and positive relationship to the problem.

Also, sandplay, like hypnotherapy, induces the client into an altered state of consciousness where the subconscious mind becomes a active player and resource in the therapeutic dance. The se 1ff8 lf-directed ritual of preparing the sand, choosing the objects and focusing on creating the scene in the sand functions very much like a hypnotic induction and deepening process where the subconscious is more accessible. As in non-directive hypnotherapy, when creating the sandtray the client may choose to focus on a specific issue or concern or to allow the subconscious to spontaneously guide the focus of the session and the focus of the tray. Often a client will have no conscious awareness of what he is creating until he sits back to take in his scene in the tray.

Most importantly, sandplay is highly creative, even for people who believe they aren’t creative and it is deliciously fun. Creating sandtrays bring to the forefront issues that need transformation and assist the client in accessing the healing source from within.

During the session, the patient will be put into a state of trance and hypnotic suggestion or other special techniques are used to transform a person’s condition. While it may seem like mumbo-jumbo magic spells, therapists say their work affirms a patient’s innermost desires, unblocks any reservations the person may have about achieving their goals and uses mind over matter to inspire others to greatness.

Hypnotherapists are, first and foremost, self-motivated entrepreneurs. They are also naturally positive people who have a strong desire to help others. Since the job itself is so flexible, many therapists start off part-time, seeing people on the weekends or evenings while building a client base.

They may team up with healing centers, physical therapy offices, counselors, reiki yoga centers or acupuncture clinics to gain business. Marketing and networking are central to the success of a hypnotherapist.

Some professionals run home offices to keep overhead costs down, while others gain employment at a hypnosis center. Later, experienced specialists usually branch off to hold weekend workshops and retreats, teach classes or offer group sessions. Some even take their talents to the stage.

While not required, gaining hypnotherapy certification can be a great way for aspiring hypnotherapists to build rapport with prospective clients, gain added marketing exposure and prove themselves as a cut above the rest. The American Society for Clinical Hypnosis Certification and Approved Consultant Program holds national prestige as an emerging standard for hypnosis training.

Professionals will receive a diploma from the American Board of Medical Hypnosis, the American Board of Psychological Hypnosis, the American Board of Hypnosis in Dentistry, or the American Hypnosis Board for Clinical Social Work.

There are many schools specializing in training hypnotherapists. In Southern California, the Hypnosis Motivation Institute offers an intensive four-week course in hypnotherapy certification. Local residents can receive their training completely free and out-of-state individuals can take a distance course at no charge as well. In Illinois, The Alternative Practitioner Academy (Apatoday) offers several different hypnosis training certifications, including stage hypnotism, National Guild of Hypnotherapy certification, medical hypnotism and clinical hypnotherapy.

They have free marketing training too. The Hypnotherapy Training Institute of San Francisco, California is another respected school where people can learn about hypnosis through meetings, classes, workshops, mentoring and courses.

Hypnosis has proven effective to cure many conditions, habits and behaviors. One of such is nail biting. A more-common-than-you-think problem that affects millions of people worldwide and that in the worst case can bring negative side effects and social shame.

Why hypnosis for nail biting?

Hypnosis is a state of trance in which a person becomes more aware, focused and open to suggestions. These suggestions work on a subconscious level, just like the habits! The practice of hypnosis is very old, it is a field which has been developing over the years and now is widely used as treatment (Hypnotherapy).

If you think hypnosis is ‘dark stuff’, think twice. It has been used widely by a vast number of psychologists as a valid method of treatment. And I know there are maybe beliefs out there that talk nonsense about hypnosis, like the myth that you’ll never wake up from the trance, but those who speak such things are incorrect. Hypnosis works, and works for our benefit.

The issue of the nail biting habit

Habits live in the subconscious after years of behaving the same way over time. Like the nail biting habit, there is nose-picking, nose-picking, lip-biting, etc, etc and those all work pretty much the same way: you start doing them when you feel anxious, stressed or bored without noticing them until they get ‘printed’ in your behavior.

So, having this situation, we need to ‘re-program’ our brains, first by un-learning the habit, and then by finding better ways to cope with the situations that lead to nail biting. For hypnosis for nail biting to work, you must also have to first set the intention to make it work, if you don’t want it to work, it won’t.

Products Available for Nail Biting Hypnosis

In the days that we live now, the technology has helped us a lot distributing audios that will help us get rid of nail biting using hypnosis. These are called ‘Hypnosis Tapes’ and in them you won’t hear anything, probably just music or white noise. But the magic happens in the subconscious level. There is a wave that is not perceived by the conscious mind, this wave is filled with suggestions that will enter your mind like a knife enters butter.

If you don’t like tapes or audios that may sound just like a song, well you can go to a certified hypnotherapist. Hypnotherapists will address your own personal issue and can get sure that you drop this habit using their own techniques. However, be aware that there are some scammers out there. Search for an hypnotherapist that has a certification form an acknowledge institute. But well, form my experience, hypnosis tapes work just fine, of course the change doesn’t happen overnight, you have to have patience and trust the process. Many people end up surprised by what can be accomplished with hypnosis for nail biting.

That was, it a quick tour into the world of hypnosis for nail biting. Many people see this as an unorthodox method, since it deals with the non-physical world. But remember there is a lot of stuff out there that we do not see, like air or gravity, but they still work. It’s in your power to change your habits for good and become a person with healthy nails and less stress.

You’ve narrowed your self-improvement goals to just one for the session.

You’ve made sure the hypnotherapist you’ve chosen is expert, certified and friendly.

You’re know you have no bad medical or psychological conditions which would impede your success.

But you’re still uncomfortable about some aspects of the hypnotherapeutic process. And you’d like your questions answered. Have you considered the importance of the "pretalk" to make sure the session is effective?

Let me tell about Mike Anders, one of my clients, who had years of hypnosis experience dealing with issues like improving self-confidence, quitting smoking, losing weight, and fearing the loss of sexual arousal. He was happy with those results. But before we started this new hypnosis session, he really needed to process his feelings (and his metaphorical approach) about having to make an important speech before the directors of his Fortune 500 company.

Here’s how I settled down Mike’s concerns about his public speaking fears

I took as much time as Mike needed to answer each question about how hypnosis would help his public speaking. This was the most important and first step.

I reassured him in a realistic way

I made it customized

I empathized with his situation compassionately

All of these client-hypnosis "pretalk" segments can strongly influence how well everything goes during the hypnotherapy session — and more importantly — how powerful and permanent the new speechmaking confidence became.

If you’re the client, here’s what you can do to help your hypnotherapist:

Make sure you’re secure about your personal (and professional) relationship you have with your hypnosis provider

Ask yourself: Am I completely relaxed in these surroundings?

Have you taken enough time to feel good about how thoroughly your questions are answered before the hypnotic suggestions would begin with your hypnotherapist?

Mike Anders’ speaking-confidence hypnosis inductions and suggestions went smoothly. In fact, as he left that session he started to feel much more confident he could succeed with that upcoming very important and once-dreaded speech.

Days later I got an email from Mike. The speech had gone so well his colleagues and boss were astonished. And his new speechmaking comfort level and smoothness became remarkable — whether the group was small or large. To use Mike’s word, hypnosis made him "unnervous" about public speaking from that day on. Now Mike gives business seminars for his company all over the country!

We’ve learnedabout ‘emotional eating habits’, those eating behaviors thatare related to emotional longings rather than the body’s realneed for nutrition. The first thing we explored was the infantile programming to overeat created by the common practice of bottle feeding when accompanied by parental neglect. We learned how to heal these traumas from infancy and thus permanently change these habits. In this article, I will address the use of food to suppress emotions, in other words, stuffing one’s feelings with food.

Many of us were raised in families where the expression of feelings was discouraged or even punished. Such phrases as
‘Shut up or I’ll give you something to cry about!’ or
‘Children should be seen and not heard’ represent extreme but
regrettably common examples. More frequently however we find
the parent who is simply too busy and stressed to listen to
their children’s feelings and needs. Sometimes children
discover on their own that eating some food can help them
suppress their anger and tears. Sometimes they are
programmed by their parents to eat in this dysfunctional way.

A child cries with pain, or needing some attention, and even
a well-meaning mother will shove a bottle into the child’s
mouth or give her a cookie to silence her. It doesn’t take
long for the child to learn this life-long eating habit.

The solution is to return the client in trance to the time he
or she first learned to stuff their feelings with food. Then
we can bring in the resource of the client’s adult self to
encourage the child to express their feelings. As a therapist
I will often need to encourage my client to express their
feelings, anger, tears, etc. in a loud voice. ‘That’s good!
You tell them! You deserve to be heard’ are all expressions I
frequently use. Then we use the empowered adult self along
with, if necessary, the presence of a new inner parent to
respond lovingly and approvingly to the child’s expression of
feeling. Then we help the child experience the incomparable
joy of their needs being met. The client is encouraged to
feel in their bodies the fulfillment of these experiences.
Finally, we bring this newly developed skill of expressing
feelings into the client’s present life and present
communications, sometimes through assertiveness training,
sometimes through mental rehearsals. In effect, we are
training the client’s subconscious mind to express feelings
safely and confidently.

Here’s an example. Sarah (not her real name) is 50 lbs.
overweight and reports that stuffing her feelings is a
problem. Her subconscious mind takes us to a memory of her
mother and her in the kitchen. She’s crying about a broken
toy, and feeling neglected by Mom who’s on the phone. Mom
hands her a cookie along with a look that clearly implies she
is not to be disturbed. While this kind of daily neglect
rarely gets the media attention of sexual or violent abuse
incidents, it is these supposedly mundane events which
repeated often enough produce the syndrome we’re describing
in many of my clients. Our therapeutic intervention begins
with bringing in the client’s adult self. The adult self
tells mother that she is making a big mistake. I encourage
her to loudly express her anger. Mom is immediately
remorseful. Then we ask her child to express her tears
again, which she does out loud. Then, we gently instruct Mom
in how to listen to her child’s needs and respond to them (If
Mother were less warmly responsive it might have been
necessary to release her and replace her with a new mother in
the client’s inner world. This would not significantly
affect the adult Sarah’s relationship with her present time
mother, but simply provide a symbolic new resource for the
child of the past.) We then embed this new resource in the
client’s body and memory, with words like ‘Now breathe in
that wonderful feeling as Mommy holds you. And now she’s
looking at your broken toy, and promises she’ll get you a new
one soon. Now she’s going into your room and helping you
find another toy to play with. Breathe in this wonderful
feeling. Notice how wonderful it is to let Mom know how you
are feeling. This is how she knows to take care of you.’
These words are called ‘counter-programming suggestions’ and
are essential to re-enforce new core beliefs and behaviors.

Now we link this new resource to every time she feels an
uncomfortable feeling in her present life. ‘Now every time
you have an unpleasant feeling, the kind that made you want
to eat, we remember how safe it is now to tell your husband
or children how you feel.’ I then walk Sarah through a quick
rehearsal of expressing this feeling to her husband. I may
even advise her on the best ways to express her feelings to
him in a style 1ff8 that he finds it easy to respond to. We’ll
also follow through in our rehearsal to see that her needs
are being met afterwards in some way. I can give her more
help in her skills of emotional expression. ‘Perhaps instead
of blaming him we could just tell him how this behavior makes
you feel?’ I persist in this rehearsal until her
communication is comfortable, and it works to get her needs
met. While shouting and crying may be a useful part of the
client’s therapy, opening up the channels of emotional
expression, it isn’t so useful in our daily family lives.
Instead the client needs to develop adult communication
skills, which in many cases have never been properly
developed.

We re-program half a dozen similar memories provided by
Sarah’s subconscious mind in this way. This includes both
repeated rescue missions for her child of the past and lots
of mental rehearsals of her new communication skills in her
adult life. After only four hours of therapy, and two weeks
later, Sarah reports. Not only is she eating far less, she
is finding her relationships are changing in dramatic and
wonderful ways. Her experiences of victimization and
powerlessness are disappearing, and love and intimacy are
growing in her family. And she is losing weight. She tells
me however, that the other changes in her life are much more
important to her than the lost weight. She is already
beginning a life that is no longer ruled by her weight
issues. I find it typical of my work with weight issues that
many other aspects of the client’s life change dramatically
for the better as we work, because we are addressing core
problems, of which weight per se is only one symptom.

In our hypnosis, we will explore how compulsive eating is
programmed to replace creativity in our lives. How we
recognize when this is happening, and how we fix it.
